About the Conference

Edinburgh 2007
In 2007, the College developed a new and exciting event in the form of the Annual Primary Care Conference. The aim was to establish this as the annual event for the College, general practice and primary care.  As well as providing opportunities to hear about principal developments in general practice and primary care, the conference provided an opportunity for College members and other members of the primary care team across the UK to network and learn from one another.

Since the huge success of our inaugral event in Edinburgh, 2007, the Conference has grown year upon year with greater number of delegates, exhibitors and a wider, more diverse programme, offering something for the whole practice team. The RCGP Annual Primary Care Conference is now in its fourth year.Bournemouth 2008

Now firmly established as the MUST ATTEND event for GPs and practice team colleagues, the conference showcases the latest clinical and policy developments across the UK and brings together an impressive range of national and international speakers.

This year’s theme is sustainable primary care - sustainable in having a central role in the delivery of health care and sustainable in terms of playing our part against global warming.

The RCGP is rapidly approaching its 60th anniversary and is now the largest Royal College by membership in the United Kingdom. The RCGP has helped to support and sustain the best of general practice and even through turbulent times, general practice continues to be at the centre of the NHS. Together we continue to provide the bulk of health care to the UK population and are able to respond to increasing demands and changing needs of patients, PCTs and politicians.

The conference looks at growing healthy partnerships and we continue within the streams of the conference programme to offer a wide choice of sessions for nurses, managers and physicians assistants within the newly launched General Practice Foundation. There is a new stream for newly qualified GPs, while the First5 and the AiTs stream is growing in strength.  We also continue to forge links with external partners – patient groups, charities and government bodies.

In terms of sustainability, Harrogate provides a safe urban setting – with easy walking from hotels to conference centre, the event will use locally sourced food, delegates will be encouraged to use public transport and participate in car sharing schemes, a policy to limit printing and use electronic media plus the use of eco materials will contribute to the first ever low-carbon footprint RCGP Conference.  The College will be setting a benchmark for the future.

A packed programme is being developed by the Conference Committee to ensure that there is something to suit everyone, with specially tailored streams for generalists, specialists, trainees, the newly qualified and the whole practice team. You will be able to shape the conference agenda by submitting papers and suggesting topics for round table discussions and there will be lots of opportunities to network and exchange ideas with fellow delegates: over 1,000 primary care professionals are expected to attend. The extended social programme will also allow time for some fun and relaxation!

As always, this will be different from any other conference you attend this year.  It’s YOUR conference – we look forward to seeing you there!

The conference will update practitioners on matters relevant to their practice for the coming year and inform and educate on the latest technological developments. The programme streams include:
