With the launch of the General
Practice Foundation in April this year, the RCGP Annual Conference
is the perfect opportunity to bring Foundation Members together and
it is set to be a brilliant event! This year’s Conference is
focused on growing healthy and sustainable partnerships, a value
which is at the heart of the Foundation’s purpose. The Conference
represents an exciting time for primary care as it highlights the
investments that are being made in the primary care team as a
whole.
Nurses, managers and physician
assistants will find a broad range of programme streams which are
relevant to their profession. These sessions will grapple with some
hot topics, giving you the chance to voice your opinion and gain a
deeper understanding of the matters that are prevalent in primary
care. There will be a range of different types of sessions, some
which will be more clinical and factual and others which will be
based on discussion and ideas
. There will also be the chance to have some
fun at the Gala Dinner and Comedy Evening!
Not only are there many
exciting benefits, but there are also heavily reduced rates for
General Practice managers, nurses and physician
assistants:

Sandy Gower, FRCGP (Hon), Managing Partner, Bennetts End
Surgery; Dr Mike Warburton, National Director for Dental
and GP Access, Programming, Commissioning and System Management
Directorate, Department of Health
An interactive workshop with
practice management input, providing the opportunity to share the
“top tips” from the recent successful RCGP regional workshops. The
session will provide updates on the resources and support
available, including those for sensory impairment, to help
practices manage the business priority of being more responsive to
patient need. It will approach ideas such as understanding patient
demand, managing and meeting demands, telephony and the Practice
environment, understanding your community, patient engagement and
marketing and communicating.
Friday 8th October
Stream event E4: Planning in challenging times
Chair: Fiona Dalziel, DL Practice Management
Consultancy; Kathie Applebee, Psychologist &
Management Consultant and Practice Principal
Planning may seem a pointless task

hostile terrain. This session considers how best to use business
planning techniques in the unique environment of general practice
without drowning in management jargon.
Stream event F4: Avoiding employment tribunals
Chair: Fiona Dalziel, DL Practice Management
Consultancy; Ian Watson, Training Services Manager, Law At
Work (UK) Ltd
This interactive workshop,
presented by Law At Work, will look at the investigation and
resolution of a particular conduct issue in a medical practice –
giving delegates a chance to discuss and influence the progress of
the disciplinary process – whilst learning what risks lie in wait
(and how to reduce them).
Saturday 9th October
Stream event G5: Doing things differently with IT in the
practice
Kathie Applebee, Psychologist, Management Consultant and
Practice Principal
Practice managers need access to a
range of software, some of which may be difficult or impossible to
access via the practice network. Is there a case for all Practice
Managers to have their own laptop to use at work? This session
reviews some of the IT tools and programs (not programmes) that can
help practices and also support the practice management
workload.
Practice management workshop
This is a 3-hour pre-bookable
workshop. One of the topics will be problem solving (with
Hilary Haman, Independent Management Adviser and trainer in primary
healthcare, Cardiff). Bring your staff problems to this
interactive session with Hilary who can advise on how to deal with
tricky HR/personnel management issues. To get the most out of this
session, please send your queries/questions in advance to hhaman@virginmedia.com (please
anonymise any information sent).
